There are essentially three channels to purchase life insurance products in Canada.
The first and the oldest in the system is to contact an agent who represents a specific company. London Life is a good example, the agent is referred to as captive in that he or she sells the majority of their products for one company.
The second approach which represents 44 per cent of insurance sales to individuals and continues to grow in Canada (-source Advocis- Forum magazine, March 2014) is to use an independent advisor or agent whom channels their business through a MGA (Managing General Agent). The significant benefit to this approach is an MGA will research the market using a software program to come up with the best insurance solution for the lowest price. The third approach, which is becoming popular with seniors and individuals with serious health problems and is well advertised by a number of companies on TV, is the guaranteed issue product. No medical, guaranteed to be approved but at significantly higher premiums. If you have a significant health problem, we will work with you and the insurance company to come up with the lowest cost solution.
